On November 23, 2010 the W3C HTML working group released a Second Edition of the XHTML 1.1 specifications. It is the first update to the HTML markup language since the revisions to XHTML 1.0 (A Reformulation of HTML 4) in August 2002.
The Recommendation for XHTML 1.1 - Second Edition adds an XML Schema implementation of the HTML language, in addition to the [X]HTML DTD.
The news was not widely reported by tech blogs and podcasts. Current ongoing work on HTML 5 is more significant, since it provides migration paths to convert from either HTML 4 or XHTML and browser vendors are busy implementing many of the new features in HTML 5.
